Flight Log for Rubber Band Powered Airplanes

Rubber band airplanes provide hands-on experience in science and engineering. The concepts of potential energy, energy transfer, and aerodynamics when applied to a tangible project such as an aircraft are often more easily understood and retained.

Don’t have a rubber band airplane? These aircraft can be made using supplies purchased at a hobby or building supply store. Instructions can be found online. If you prefer, a full range of aircraft are available for purchase in hobby stores and online.

Once you have an aircraft, honing the plane’s flight often requires multiple adjustments. To record these adjustments and their results, a detailed log sheet is essential. This flight log includes space to record the following information:

• aircraft name
• motor (rubber band) size & weight
• number of winds & un-wind turns
• propeller pitch
• wing stabilizer
• maximum height
• number of circles completed
• flight duration
• flight conditions
• location and if indoors, ceiling height
