What is the HSLDA?

Properly titled the Homeschool Legal Defense Association, the HSLDA provides information and services to homeschool families.

This non-profit organization was founded by two homeschool dads in 1983. As attorneys they began assisting homeschool families with legal issues and helped pave the way for homeschool freedom in all fifty states. They continue to serve as legal advocates for home educators.

The HSLDA website offers free legal advice related to general homeschool issues, as well as curriculum advice. Paid membership includes access to a 24/7 hotline, individualized guidance and representation for legal issues, personalized educational recommendations including IEP’s and special accommodations, online class discounts, a monthly magazine, and (a paid service) ID card creation. Membership dues can be paid monthly or annually, with a lifetime option available. Small discounts are offered to the military, first responders, full-time pastors, and missionaries, and with selecting the auto-renew option. Families who are interested but not currently homeschooling are welcome to join.

Though a Christian organization, HSLDA services are available to all. Declarations of faith or personal convictions are not conditions of membership. A detailed description of the organizations’ beliefs are found on their website.

Initially focused on the legal educational rights of parents, HSDLA has expanded to offer practical assistance to homeschool families. They offer advice on many topics from curriculum choice to grading. The association also provides hardship grants for families who are experiencing financial difficulty or who have experienced a natural disaster. Donations are gratefully accepted to fund these endeavors.
